The Music Moment for January 3: Dido and Aeneas
Purcell’s opera *Dido and Aeneas* tells the story of Queen Dido and her love for the hero Aeneas. Through the spells of witches, she is separated from him and dies of a broken heart—and this opening of the third act happens to be the very moment when the witches celebrate the success of their plan… Recorded during the IJ-Salon tour of *Dido and Aeneas* on October 3, 2021, at Tivoli Vredenburg, Utrecht.
The Music Moment for December 29: “Cupid Only Throws the Dart”
An excerpt from Purcell’s magnificent opera *Dido and Aeneas*: “Cupid only throws the dart.” Recorded on May 1, 2021, at the Muziekgebouw during the IJ-Salon Dido and Aeneas.
The Music Moment for December 28: Moma Yenka
The charismatic Ghanaian trumpeter and composer Berima Amo introduces classical musicians from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra to Ghanaian music. This upbeat song was recorded during African Vibes, which was livestreamed on April 4, 2021.
The Music Moment for December 27: Schubert's "Trout" Quintet
Beautiful music was composed by a strange, socially awkward man—a lonely outsider in a world that didn’t understand him: Franz Schubert. This classical piece is examined through the lens of Planet AiRich, a brilliant young woman and leading figure in Afrofuturism in the Netherlands. Recorded during the IJ-Salon “Schubert and the New World” on November 28, 2020, at Het Muziekgebouw.
The Music Moment for December 24: Mideba (traditional)
This upbeat song was played during The Black Mozart From the 2019–2020 season. Four classical string players and three musicians from the Afro-Surinamese community came together for a unique project: the Broki Rhythm & Strings Septet! Recorded at the Bijlmer Parktheater on November 2, 2019.
